《黄河船夫曲》是《黄河大合唱》的第一乐章，是一首混声合唱。这里运用了黄河船夫号子的音调素材。这一乐章分三个部分。第一部分描绘了船夫们与风浪搏击的场面，音乐充满战斗的力量。第二部分是根据开始的主题旋律，拉宽了节奏、放慢了速度，表现船夫们穿过了急流、靠近了河岸的那种欣慰。这表明，中国人民尽管处在艰难抗战之中，但已看到了胜利的曙光。第三部分，音乐又回到了乐章开始的速度上，但又由强渐弱，由近到远。这一乐章通过黄河船夫与急浪、险滩的搏斗，象征着中国人民与日本帝国主义日趋激烈的民族矛盾。
