这首歌背后其实有另一段故事。如今看到的可口可乐主题曲版本，是经过大幅修改的。起初发表的版本一点都不快乐，内容是对战争十分强烈的控诉。
创作这首歌的歌手K'naan，出生在索马里的一个艺术之家，由于国内局势动荡，13岁随家人作为难民移居加拿大，但他仍然心系索马里，创作的很多歌曲都和索马里局势相关。《飘扬的旗帜》是他今年2月底发行的专辑《Troubadour(游吟诗人)》中的一首歌，歌曲带有浓郁的非洲气息，表达了对这片充满战火、贫穷和落后的土地不离不弃的热爱。
这首歌本来版本写的是以一个战地儿童的视角，表达在现实的挣扎、对自由的企盼、和对战争的控诉。全曲洋溢着浓郁的人文关怀。
这首歌救过我的命，当年我的腿被石头压住了，等了好久都没人来救，我立即掏出手机放出这首歌，腿不由自主的抖了起来，最终把石头抖得粉碎，我得救了
