The waltz's introduction is derived from an ascending three-note figure that hints at the rhythm of the first theme, a three-note monotone completed by a little fall over a pronounced Viennese waltz rhythm. The ensuing sequences proceed through quite perky, often birdlike material, although Lanner relies heavily on repetition -- not merely repetition of long sections, but repetition of tiny phrases and small figures. Melody is almost always carried in the highest instruments, mainly violins and flutes, with the bass marking the dance rhythm cleanly and the middle voices providing a bit of harmony, concise countermelodies, and "echo" material. Within this multisection waltz there's a swirling, dizzy (but not fast) episode that looks ahead to Johann Strauss II's Perpetuum Mobile, and a playful episode with a simple tune that skips up and down the scale alongside commentary from a woodwind figure that sounds either like a birdcall or a sprung bedspring. After these and other segments, the final section revives some of the material presented before, notably the first principal melody, and is capped by a lengthy coda.
