The symphony is a graceful work. Boccherini never adopted the fashionable "Mannheim sound" for his symphonies, and hence wrote gentler, less dramatic music, relying on his ear for orchestral color and his interest in using the top string players in solo roles frequently, often mixing them with winds. Even the opening movement (Allegro moderato) in D minor is melancholy rather than dramatic. The second movement is a Menuetto con moto of charming quality, but the third movement, Andante amoroso, has a feeling of heartbreak and moments of unusual rhythmic emphasis. The finale, Allegro vivo ma non presto, has delightful interlocking counterpoint and imaginative use of cello and the two horns along with other instruments in concerto-like solo turns.
