《The Monster》最初由Frequency、Alias、Bebe Rexha和乔恩·贝利恩等人创作，取样自Bebe Rexha歌曲《Monster Under My Bed》。Bebe Rexha表示，歌曲的创作灵感来源于她本人试图走出低迷时期的经历。当歌曲创作完成后，制作人Frequency将歌曲提供给了Shady唱片公司的执行副总裁瑞格斯·莫拉莱斯。在听完这首歌曲后，瑞格斯·莫拉莱斯便要求得到歌曲的一些片段，并将其送至埃米纳姆的手上。之后埃米纳姆接受了这首歌曲，并在歌曲中加入他个人的说唱部分，同时对伴奏进行了调整。歌曲是埃米纳姆与蕾哈娜之间继《Love the Way You Lie》、《Love The Way You Lie (Part II)》和《Numb》之后的第四次合作。埃米纳姆认为蕾哈娜是完成这首歌曲演绎的合适人选，因为他认为大众将他们都视为“疯狂的人”，并将这些想法都告诉了蕾哈娜。
