这首歌歌词真的很黑暗，小时候听不懂，听旋律觉得是一首很轻快的歌，长大后看了歌词才懂得这首歌歌词中写的内容。
一直都觉得张韶涵这版《I started a joke》非常感人，彼时这张专辑发行，正直她遭受亲情非议，人生演艺事业跌落谷底，歌词中所写的被愚弄被自伤记叙，仿佛都映射着她当时的心境。加之她特有的清亮嗓音演绎，完全褪去原唱的乡村音乐调调的淡然怡乐，留下的是无比真诚的控诉和自白，词里曲间说的都是自己的故事，真的特别动人。比她后来各种所谓励志曲、反击都好得太多太多。
