A virtuoso on the trumpet, Al Hirt was often "overqualified" for the Dixieland and pop music that he performed. He studied classical trumpet at the Cincinnati Conservatory (1940-1943) and was influenced by the playing of Harry James. He freelanced in swing bands (including both Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, and Ray McKinley) before returning to New Orleans in the late '40s and becoming involved in the Dixieland movement. He teamed up with clarinetist Pete Fountain on an occasional basis from 1955 on, and became famous by the end of the decade. An outstanding technician with a wide range, along with a propensity for playing far too many notes, Hirt had some instrumental pop hits in the 1960s. He also recorded swing and country music, but mostly stuck to Dixieland in his live performances. He remained a household name throughout his career, although one often feels that he could have done so much more with his talent. Hirt's early Audiofidelity recordings (1958-1960) and collaborations with Fountain are the most rewarding of his long career; he died at his home in New Orleans on April 27, 1999. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi

For this particular LP, Hirt is joined by an orchestra and string section arranged by Marty Paich. The emphasis is mostly on ballads (only "East of the Sun" and "Easy to Love" are medium tempo). Unfortunately, the string parts are dull and unimaginative, and Hirt is not inspired to do much more than state melodies and play it safe. A bit of a disappointment

The interplay is flirtatious and surprisingly natural between the actress (known best for Bye Bye Birdie, but soon to star with Elvis Presley in Viva Las Vegas) and Hirt, whose vocals are warm but a little stilted, especially on the title track, where his spacing with his trumpet is much better than his sing-speak voice. Ann-Margret displays her dynamite performing persona, using her vocals to act out the songs rather than singing straight. And the material is perfect for the occasion, standards from the past few decades that the pair don't so much perform as dance around, letting listeners fill in the familiar lyrics and melodies with their imaginations. Produced in Nashville by Chet Atkins, it marks Hirt's first session to include vocals (by the Anita Kerr Singers) and places his trademark commanding trumpet tone right up front. Though Hirt is, of course, from New Orleans, the backing band is composed of Atkins' A-list Music City stalwarts: saxophonist Boots Randolph, bassist Bob Moore, guitarist Grady Martin, and piano great Floyd Cramer. The match is a good one, though it should be noted that the music here is pop through and through; Atkins' genius as a producer was always to combine disparate elements into a cohesive and ultra-smooth whole. Don't expect a lot of chops-busting jazz improvisation (or even much Dixieland); the focus here is on stating the melody as clearly and cleanly as possible with a minimum of fuss. This Hirt does brilliantly, adding ad-lib flourishes so perfectly phrased that they sound written out. Although it's tempting to dismiss a record like this as simple elevator music, the extraordinary level of craftsmanship and sublime, no-frills playing places the album in a category with the finest minimalist art. Perhaps the best thing about Honey in the Horn, however, is the pure sonic beauty of it all. No less soulful is the opening cover of Booker T. & the MG's"Honey Pot" or the bluesy "Sweetlips" -- "Love Ya Baby" even gets funky, albeit in a forty-something white guy kinda way.
