《犹太女》的故事正是在这一历史背景下展开的。作为被侮辱，被损害的犹太人，其社会地位和处境都极为悲惨。故事以两条线索展开，一条由犹太金饰匠埃莱沙和其女儿拉歇尔。埃莱沙是个信仰坚定的人，他拒绝天主教徒命令他们关闭作坊，停止营业的要求。为此，他不惜被迫害。另一条是莱奥波德王子因为爱上了拉歇尔，为了接近心上人，不惜装扮成学徒工在埃莱沙的铺子里帮工，在事情败露后，直接导致了这对犹太父女的悲剧。从剧情来看，埃莱沙是个信仰坚定，富有正义感，慈悲仁慈的犹太人。但由于长期被迫害，心灵多少已经有些扭曲，这使他宁死也不愿皈依天主教，在他身上其实也有《威尼斯商人》中夏洛克的那种强烈，阴暗的报复心理。而他的女儿拉歇尔事实上是他的养女，是他当年从现在的红衣主教失火的房屋中救出来的，他把拉歇尔也培养成了一个坚定的犹太教徒。在执行死亡仪式前，埃莱沙暗示红衣主教布洛格尼，他的女儿还在人间，但拒绝透露半点信息，只到死亡仪式执行时，等拉歇尔跳入油锅后，埃莱沙才告诉布洛格尼，这就是你的女儿。这是一个让人毛骨悚然的报复，是一种绝望的抗争，为此埃莱沙不惜牺牲心爱的养女。在第四幕中，埃莱莎沙唱的一首全剧中最哀伤，痛苦的咏叹调表明了他此时矛盾，痛苦的心理煎熬。但是一种什么样的仇恨能让人作出如此惨痛的决定，其理由便是信仰，是我们，至少是我很难理解，也恐惧理解的信仰。如果埃莱沙遵照红衣主教的条件，放弃犹太教，改信天主教，他不但可以拯救他们父女俩，甚至由于养女的关系，他们从此以后可以过上平静安宁的生活。至少埃莱沙自己可以选择死亡，而让拉歇尔活下来。但埃莱沙却用信仰，这种狂暴的力量，拒绝了苟且，他的报复有着强烈的内心驱动，但也过于狰狞——这是全剧中最让人绝望，不寒而栗的场景。而在某种程度上，深受迫害的埃莱沙也无视一个生命无辜的陨落，这是一种可怕的，非理性的报复，其所有的动机都是源于——恨！那种刻骨铭心的恨！
