《Somebody That I Used to Know》创作并录制于墨尔本Gotye父母的房子中，歌曲的歌词来源于Gotye过去五六年前真实的感情经历。对此， Gotye表示这不是一段令人厌恶的一段恋情，但它是错综复杂的，在这段时间内Gotye和他的女友彼此伤害，这让Gotye觉得继续这样下去倒不如他们分手，结束这一段错误的恋情。于是Gotye写下名为《Somebody That I Used to Know》的歌曲，并将其作为分手歌曲送给他的女友，希望未来的时间里，自己和女友都能够改变自己。
