This relatively short suite is in three movement, the first of which is titled Fandanguillo. The fandanguillo is modelled after the common Spanish flamenco dance Fandango--defined by Groves dictionary as, Òa Castilian and Andalucian courtship dance in triple meter and moderately fast tempo.Ó After a very brief introduction, the haunting opening theme begins.In the second movement, titled Arada and marked Lento, the composer exhibits his deft skills at shaping beautiful, song-like melodies. Part of what may account for Moreno-TorrobaÕs cunning ability as a melody writer may be the fact that he was a leading composer fo zarzuela--a Spanish form of light opera. We see in Moreno-TorrobaÕs instrumental melodies, the same qualities that one would associate with a vocal melody. Also, in Arada, we see the use of Òchordal planingÓ--a compositional technique frequently employed by the French impressionist composers.The short third movement, Danza, closes the piece in a rapid and lively expression of cheer.
